Space Saving Ideas For Home Bakers With Limited Storage
Baking in a small kitchen can be a challenge, but with a few clever storage solutions, you can maximize every inch of space and keep your baking essentials organized.
For years, I ran my home baking business out of a very tiny kitchen in my flat in London, so I know how limited storage can be a bit of a nightmare! Recently, a couple of group members asked for some recommendations, so I’ve put together a list of space-saving tips to make your kitchen more functional for baking.
Use Vertical Space: Install shelves on walls or the inside of cabinet doors to store lighter items like mixing bowls, measuring cups, and small baking tools. Magnetic strips on walls can also hold metal tools like spatulas and whisks.
Stackable Storage Bins: Stackable bins or containers for dry ingredients (like flour, sugar, and cocoa powder) save space and keep ingredients fresh. Opt for clear containers to easily see what you have.
Drawer Dividers for Utensils: Organise your baking tools with drawer dividers. They separate items like whisks, spatulas, and measuring spoons, making them easy to find and freeing up countertop space.
Rolling Kitchen Cart: A small, mobile cart can act as additional counter space, storage, or even a baking station. You can roll it out when baking and tuck it away when done.
Over-the-Sink or Stove Cutting Boards: Cutting boards that fit over the sink or stove create additional prep space without taking up extra counter room. They’re especially useful in smaller kitchens.
Collapsible and Nesting Tools: Look for collapsible mixing bowls, measuring cups, and baking tools that can be stacked or nested. This minimises the space needed to store them when not in use.
Hang Measuring Spoons and Cups: Use hooks or adhesive strips on the inside of cabinet doors to hang measuring spoons and cups. It keeps them handy without taking up drawer space.
Under-Shelf Baskets: These baskets attach to the bottom of shelves, creating extra storage space underneath for smaller items like spices, extracts, or cake toppers.
Use the Back of the Door: Over-the-door organisers work great for holding baking sheets, muffin tins, and cooling racks. Perfect for pan storage without taking up shelf space.
Label Everything: Clear labelling of containers, bins, and jars keeps everything organised, saves time, and ensures nothing gets lost in the shuffle.
Keep Only Essentials: When space is tight, focus on tools and ingredients you use regularly. Donate or store rarely used items to keep your workspace uncluttered.
